The 4Cs, Demystified

Cut, color, clarity, and carat — what actually moves the needle on beauty and price.

7 min read

Every diamond is graded on four characteristics — the “4Cs.” Understanding them is the difference between overpaying and buying smart. Here’s what actually matters.

Cut — the one that makes it sparkle

Cut is not the shape (round, oval, etc.) — it’s how well the diamond’s facets are proportioned to return light. It’s the single biggest driver of beauty. A stone with an Excellent or Ideal cut looks brighter and more brilliant than a larger stone with a poor cut. If you optimize one thing, optimize cut.

Color — how white it looks

Diamond color is graded D (colorless) through Z (light yellow). The trick: the difference between neighboring grades is nearly invisible to the eye. F–H faces up beautifully white, especially in white gold or platinum, and costs far less than D–E. In yellow or rose gold, you can comfortably go a grade or two lower.

Clarity — its tiny fingerprints

Clarity measures inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). The grades run from Flawless down through VVS, VS, SI, and I. The smart zone is VS1–VS2, where inclusions aren’t visible without magnification. SI1 stones can also be “eye-clean” and offer real value — we check every stone face-up.

Carat — its weight, not its size

Carat is weight, not diameter. Because price jumps at the round numbers (1.00ct, 2.00ct), buying just under — say 0.90ct or 1.90ct — saves money for a size difference no one can see. Shape also affects how large a stone looks: ovals and pears “face up” bigger than rounds of the same weight.

Putting it together

For most buyers, the best-value combination is Excellent cut, F–H color, VS clarity, with carat chosen just under a round number. That’s exactly how we guide stone selection in the ring builder. Browse engagement rings to see it in practice.
